Lake District River Trips

Canoeing, SUP and Kayaking river trips

Away from the busy central Lakes such as Coniston Water, the Lake District also holds a fantastic collection of 'forgotten' rivers. These range from the very slow and easy, to fast and furious white water, allowing us to run canoe, kayak and SUP river trips for all abilities.

What is it?

Our Lake District canoe, kayak or SUP river trips are suitable for absolute beginners, and we run them as a full day activity. The first part of the day is spent exploring a beautiful Lake, developing our boat and board skills as we go and setting us up for the approaching river section. After stopping for a bite to eat, we will enter the river mouth, and cover the basic skills required to safely get down the rapids.

As the river carries us along we hope to see herons and kingfishers and will tackle several stretches of white water rapids, all whilst being surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in England. The canoes, kayaks and paddle boards are all fairly forgiving craft, but there is always a chance of a dunking - it all adds to the outdoor adventure... wet or dry, this full day Lake District experience really will leave you with some amazing memories to take back home!

It is a surprisingly relaxing activity as the river current does most of the work allowing you to sit back and enjoy the ride, although you always need to be ready for the next corner or sticking out tree... Before running any rapids a comprehensive briefing will be given by your instructor who will never be far away. The only requirement is to be confident in water; you don't need to be a really strong swimmer, as you will be wearing a buoyancy aid throughout the trip.

Equipment provided

We will provide all the technical equipment required, and you can either be brave and paddle in warm clothes with our waterproofs over the top, or opt for one of our wetsuits (wetsuits essential for paddleboards!).

To Canoe, Kayak or Paddle Board?

If you have NOT paddled before, we will run the trip in either Canadian canoes (these are open boats with no top deck, paddled by 2 people) or Paddle Boards which are for one (be the captain of your own boat!). If you do have some prior kayaking experience, then you can also choice to kayak. Please be honest, as it is MUCH harder in kayaks if you don’t have the basics, and will make your day really frustrating! Either canoe or paddle board is great fun for beginneers, and you get the satisfaction of learning a fantastic new skill too 🙂

Please note the kayak comfort limit; 13 stone max and shorter than 6 foot

Paddled Before?

If you are more experienced and have a certain Lake District river trip in mind then please feel free to contact us, and we can provide transport / equipment, local details, or an instructor for you. Our modern specialised river running boats handle very well and will forgive the odd bash!

Mobile Adventure's river trips are run all through the year, with the venue chosen depending on the groups ability and local water levels, throughout the Lake District national park. Some of our favourite trips are:- Middle Derwent, Eamont, River Leven and the River Brathey .

Taken at your own pace, exploring the beautiful areas, and getting to grips with your boat, there is no need to get really wet, although we can provide wetsuits if you want! We can provide canoeing and kayaking sessions on Derwent Water, Coniston water, Windermere, Grasmere
