Coniston Ghyll Scrambling (aka Gorge Walking)

in Church Beck, Coniston

Although Stonycroft was probably the original Ghyll in the Lake District, Church Beck in Coniston has fast become just as popular - and for good reason, its great fun! Suitable for adults, family groups and anyone up for an adventure, 12 years+

Starting off as a gentle trip UP stream against the crystal clear water, tackling waterfalls along the way, it soon steepens and deepens into a series of plunge pools. After several sections of great rock scrambling, we arrive at the first of the jumps down the waterfalls into the waiting pools. For those who are feeling particularly adventurous, we can venture into the upper gorge scrambling section, where larger jumps, faster flowing pools and a heart stopping slide into thin air (landing in the water again at some point we promise!) will finish your trip off with a great splash!

NEW for 2024! Although we have always provided free photos of your activity as standard, we now offer the option of hiring our GoPro equipped helmet for only £15. We will then send you a DVD of the footage for you to enjoy at your leisure. Please say at the time of booking if you want this extra service, it really is a great way of remembering your adventure in one of the finest ghyll scrambles in Coniston.

What is it?

Impossible to describe and a Lake District adventure impossible to forget! Ghyll scrambling in Church Beck (also known as gorge scrambling) is always one of the Lake District favourites and involves ASCENDING a Lake District mountain stream under the safe guidance of our experienced instructors.

Most suitable for 12+, every trip will be different depending on the water levels, but will include slides, climbs and jumps down waterfalls into the pools, and is guaranteed to have you buzzing with adrenaline by the finish.

The water in this ghyll can be fairly powerful, so you must be confident in water (although you DONT need to be a great swimmer). Your instructor will guide you along the ghyll ensuring your safety and maximising your enjoyment of a truly unique group water experience! All the challenges will be set at the right level for you, and there is no pressure to complete every part of the ghyll - there is always another way! This makes Church Beck the perfect ghyll scramble trip for teams with a mix of ages / abilities, no matter what your group size.

At the end of the trip, we will aim to finish with a unique slide into thin air... fall .... fall.... splash down!!

Gorge walking is a perfect wet weather adventure, and lets face it - it does rain ALOT in the Lake District! No mater what the water levels, we can run a great ghyll scrambling trip for you and your group.

As standard Mobile Adventure provides all our groups with high quality, well fitting wetsuits, as well as buoyancy aids, spray jackets, wetsuit socks and helmets. This means you can enjoy this amazing activity safe in the knowledge that you are wearing the best gear possible, as well as keeping warm in the waterfalls.
