Keswick Kayaking

Lake District Kayaking Taster on Derwent Water

Kayaks are boats originally developed by the Inuits for hunting and traveling across the sea. Derwent Water (or Derwentwater) is often voted the prettiest lake, close to Keswick and surrounded by the hills of Skiddaw, Cat Bells and Borrowdale. The sheltered coves and islands, along with an abundance of wildlife, make this a fantastic lake to explore by kayak or canoe.

The Mobile Adventure fleet of kayaks provides you with the perfect way to unwind and enjoy a few hours and to explore the lake. Derwentwater is ideal for water sports including canoeing and kayaking - there are four islands plus lakeshore coves to explore, as well as some jumps for the more adventurous! Mobile Adventures' lake kayaking sessions allow you to enjoy this stunning part of the Lake District at your own pace and truly appreciated the peace and quiet of our amazing location, 15min drive from the busy town of Keswick.

What is it?

Our taster Kayak experience can be as dry or wet a trip as you want, and is a fantastic way of getting out onto the water for all the family (We would suggest 10+, younger children do well in a canoe along with an adult). After meeting and getting changed, your friendly and experienced kayaking instructor will introduce you to the boats, get them set up for a good fit, and then we head out onto the beautiful Derwentwater. Once out on the water, we will adapt the activities to the group, playing games, jumping off jetty’s, explore through the nature reserve or coaching skills as you wish / require. For those wanting to stay really dry, it is possible, but a safer option would be to take a canoe instead!

As we use a touring style boat, we can cover some decent ground, without it being too taxing on the arms - these are totally different to the 'sit on top' style and are much more efficient and comfortable!

For those who are interested in learning some personal kayaking skills, we can take you through a progression of activities, from the absolute basics, right through to rescues, and give you a really good grounding for further kayaking adventures in the lake district or further afield.

Please note, if you are more than 14 stone or taller than 6foot, we strongly recommend canoeing as being more suitable for you.

Here in the Lake District, we obviously have a lot of water which is great for kayaking and canoeing activities. If you have already explored the lake, the rivers connecting the lakes together are another great Lake District canoeing challenge! Near Keswick we run a full day river trip in either canoes (suitable for total beginners) or kayaks for those who have a little previous experience.

For those who want to explore the lake in a VERY different way, we offer raft building activities - no promise of getting very far...!
