What does Climb the Mine mean?

Climb the Mine is a completely unique experience that can be found nowhere else in the country! Set inside the Honister slate mine, one of the few operational slate mines in Britain, Climb the Mine is an underground adrenaline filled adventure course travelling deep underground a Lake District mountain. Tackle the steep ladders, wire bridges, Tarzan swing, zip wire .... and have a whole lot of fun!

Is Climb the Mine dangerous?

Based on the same system as the outside Via Ferrata course, you are connected to a steel safety cable as you tackle the activity. Before you start, your instructor will explain the simple safety system to you, and help settle any nerves. You will have a practice, whilst still safely on the floor!

What is it?

After being equipped with helmets, harnesses, lanyards and torches you will be led to the beginning of the adventure, deep inside the Honister slate mine. A decent level of fitness and a reasonable head for heights are prerequisites for this 'indoor' activity!

Passing through a series of tunnels we will reach the huge underground chamber where our challenge awaits! Once you have had a practice with the safety equipment, its time to go - your instructor will guide you throughout the adrenaline filled adventure, helping and encouraging you as necessary.

As you climb the steep walls and traverse across massive underground chambers on wire bridges you can only admire the audacity of the early miners who walked up the highest mountain passes to create this underground environment, all under the shadow of England's highest mountain. Even as you follow their footsteps through the chambers it is hard to imagine the 19th century miners carving out the world famous Borrowdale Slate with their hand tools, before transporting it down the valley by foot or packhorse to the nearest markets.

The Climb the Mine combines the physical challenge of climbing with the excitement of caving and as an added bonus has the unique distinction of being an all weather activity - a great bonus in the Lake District! It really is an unique adventure experience.

You must be a minimum 1.3m tall and 10 years+
