What Is Raft Building?
Raft building is a classic team building challenge where groups work together to construct a floating raft using limited materials.
After earning equipment through fun team challenges, each group must plan their design, build their raft and then paddle it around a course on the lake.
The real challenge? Making sure it actually floats.
This activity encourages:
And of course… a healthy amount of friendly competition.
How the Raft Building Challenge Works:
1. Earn Your Equipment
Your group will first take part in a series of fun team challenges designed to earn points.
These points can be spent on materials needed to build your raft — meaning your strategy and teamwork will affect the quality of your final build.
2. Design and Build Your Raft
Once your team has chosen its materials, it’s time to get creative.
Using ropes, barrels and poles, you’ll design and construct a raft capable of carrying your team on the water. Our experienced instructors will demonstrate basic knots and offer guidance, but the final design is entirely up to you.
Expect everything from carefully engineered crafts to hilarious “Titanic-style” attempts.
3. Launch and Race
Once the rafts are complete, it's time for the real test.
Your team will launch your creation onto Derwent Water and paddle around the course to see which raft survives the challenge. Some will glide smoothly across the lake… others may end up with a refreshing swim.
Either way, it’s all part of the fun.
