Lake District Canoeing on Derwent Water

For beginners Derwent Water provides the perfect introduction to this sedate form of transport. When seen from your canoe in the middle of Derwent Water, the size and grandeur of the mountains is put in a whole new perspective, and the peace and quiet of the surroundings can be truly appreciated. Typical itinerary
- 9am
- Leave Keswick and travel to Derwent Water.
- 9.30am
- Kit up with wetsuits, cagoules and buoyancy aids.
- 9.45am
- Receive an initial briefing in canoeing and some simple coaching while still on dry land.
- 10am
- Journey across Derwent Water, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Lake District.
- 12pm
- Return to dry land with a chance to change clothing if necessary!
Canoe River Trips
For those with more experience of canoeing or wishing to push themselves to the limit, a trip down one of the local Lake District rivers can be arranged with one of our fully qualified guides. Skills such as breaking in and out, ferrygliding and running rapids safely will be introduced as we paddle down a classic Lake District river. More information about River Trips
What happens in a canoeing session?
By the end of the session we aim to provide you with the skills necessary to control your open boat canoe as you journey across Derwent Water.
After a short warm up and some coaching in basic canoe strokes a journey across Derwentwater will be planned taking in some of the most breath taking sights of the Lake District. Paddling skills will be coached in a fun environment, involving games as well as personal coaching.
Canoeing and kayaking on Derwent Water provides you with an opportunity to get closer to nature than you would think possible. In many cases canoeing will enable you to be able to travel to, and see sights accessible for only a small number of the Lake District's visitors. Indeed the beauty of canoeing is it's abilitiy to allow you to enter the natural world that surrounds us, without disturbing it's peace and tranquility.
