Ghyll Scrambling

What is Ghyll Scrambling?

Ghylls are one of the hidden gems of the Lake District and Ghyll Scrambling is the exhilarating activity of moving along these mountain streams and gorges; going up and down waterfalls with the aid of ropes, flumes, traversing rocky obstacles, jumping into deep swirling plunge pools… the list goes on! You won't believe how much fun this is until you've tried it! Very wet, wild and challenging, this is probably the most exciting activity you can do in Cumbria and justifiably one of Mobile Adventures most popular!

During your session we will tutor you in the art of ghyll scrambling, covering all aspects including:-

  • moving with the water
  • appropriate route selection

  • and [if appropriate to the ghyll being used]
  • ropes handling techniques
  • fixed belays
  • abseiling.

Location

Mobile Adventures Ghyll Scrambling courses are run exclusively in the Lake District through the year. Some of our favourite outings are:- Stonycroft Ghyll, Esk Gorge, Church Beck and Tilberthwaite Ghyll.

Level of Difficulty / Fitness Requirements

The Ghylls we use have a wide range of difficulty from beginner to expert, so whether it is your first time or one of many, we can cater to your group’s particular needs or desires. Our clients range from young [10 is around a sensible starting age] to ‘young at heart’ [youngest heart so far…68!] and from low to high fitness. Neither age nor physical conditions are barriers to an enjoyable trip with Mobile Adventure. We have found that the most important factor is a sense of humour and confidence in water. An ability to swim is desirable, but not essential!
