FAQs

Here we've listed some of the most frequently asked questions about the National 3 Peaks Challenge

Q: How much training is required?
=> You can't just turn up and expect to complete something as demanding as the National 3 Peaks! The more training you put in, the easier and more enjoyable you will find your challenge. We will send you a fitness guide before your event, with a suggested built up of 8 weeks.

Q: How much sleep will I get?
=> Most people find that they manage to sleep between Scafell and Ben Nevis, which gives you a possible 5 hours in the 24! Those who can cat-nap in a moving mini-bus defiantly have an unfair advantage!

Q: Just how hard is it?
=> This is very hard to gauge as each individual is different. However with some training before the challenge [see above] it IS achievable by any reasonably active adult. The challenge is a marathon rather than a sprint, so determination and motivation is also really important. Some marathon runners have said that the 3 Peaks is harder, whilst other people seem to cruise their way through!

Q: What do I need to carry on the mountains?
=> You will personally need to carry water, food, waterproof top / bottoms, and an extra warm top. On some days you may also need a hat and gloves. A 1st aid kit, maps etc will be carried by your guide.

Q: Do I need a map / mountain walking experience?
=> As you will be guided by a fully qualified mountain leader [at a max ratio of 1:8], you will not need to do any navigation. Your guide will also set an appropriate pace, so you won't 'burn out' on the 1st peak! We strongly suggest that you go walking in some mountain environments if you never have before. This will allow your ankle muscle to get ready for walking fast on uneven ground, as well as improving your balance and confidence walking on steep broken and possibily slippy ground!

Q: Will there be snow?
=> On Ben Nevis there is a high chance that you will at least see some snow patches, and quite often we will need to cross some snow fields on the summit. If your challenge is early on in the year, the entire summit plateau may well be covered, with the summit cairn buried!

Q: Can we walk and drive ourselves, instead of finding someone else to drive us?
=> Ideally not - driving and walking is certainly not recommended. Driving while tired is a major cause of accidents, and it just isn't worth it. Try and find a friend or two to drive you, who can also help prepare food for the walkers when they return to the car.

Q: Do I need to do it for charity?
=> A: This is entirely up to you, but there's no reason why not. If you can't think of a charity that has a personal meaning to you, you might want to look for a small, local charity. This way you'll be helping your local area and may be able to see the results of your generosity.

Q: What weather can we expect?
=> A: A very few, lucky groups, will spend their entire challenge in glorious sunshine! However this is the UK, and it is likely that at some point we will hit a wet and / or windy patch!
